25 April 2007, ICC, Birmingham The theory around leadership doesn’t always stack up to the reality of running a team or a business. The ILM Annual Conference on Leadership will unravel the fact from the fantasy offering solutions to the challenges facing leaders and managers today. Television presenter David Bull from Living TV’s Britain’s Most Haunted will host the panel debate on Real-life leadership, looking at how leadership is faring in UK plc. While leadership expert Paul Birch of Vision Juice will give an entertaining account of how changes in culture, society and economies on the global stage have influenced our views on leadership in the Leadership evolution. Keynote speaker Robert Swan — the first man to walk to both the North and South Poles — explains how he overcome obstacles and harnessed key leadership skills in the world’s most hostile environments. His 900-mile journey in the ‘Footsteps of Scott’ across the treacherous Antarctic ice cap to the South Pole is the longest unassisted walk ever made. The conference is taking an entirely different approach explains Kim Parish, ILM’s chief executive: ‘We all know that good leadership makes sense. We wanted to hold a conference that could tease out the fact from the fiction – and sharpen the leadership style of delegates at the same time.’ The conference’s interactive workshops will offer delegates the chance to grapple with key leadership challenges: · Paul Tizzard of Insights Training will enable delegates to see what makes other people tick in What type of leader are you? If you’ve ever wondered why some people seem easy to manage while others drive you batty then this is the workshop for you. · In Creativity in leadership, Katrina Malone of the Learning Company will help you to harness your inner creativity. She says being creative represents both the greatest opportunity and hardest challenge for the successful manager. · In Values driven leadership, Simon Hollington of Values Based Leadership promises to explore how understanding your own values can help you become a more effective leader and how values can improve business performance. · Professor Michael Sheehan of the University of Glamorgan argues that only leadership can motivate the actions needed to alter behaviour in any significant way. In Leading through change, Michael explains how to make change stick. The winners of the ILM Awards 2007 will also be presented with their awards at the conference in a special ceremony after lunch. These awards promote the very best in personal and professional achievement and will be made in four categories: ILM Achiever of the Year, ILM Employer of the Year, ILM Learner of the Year and ILM Tutor of the Year.
