Challenges of Leadership - The Life & Times of the CEO
3i and Penna Sanders & Sidney commissioned Cranfield School of Management to carry out independent research into the tenure and role of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and, in particular, to compare the role in quoted and unquoted companies.
The scope of the research, which was conducted in February and March 1999, was the largest 350 quoted companies and the largest 100 unquoted companies in the UK.
For the research, the chief executives of a number of the UK's top publicly quoted and private companies were interviewed and they spoke frankly to us about the challenges they face. It's tough at the top but, overall, they like it there. However, the tougher it is, the shorter the CEO's tenure, and it is shortest in the publicly quoted sector where the pressures imposed by investors and the media are at their greatest.
This executive summary offers a snapshot of lenght of tenure, the role of equity in retention, the pressures faced by CEO's now and in the future; and it ends with advice for new appointees to the role of Chief Executive. Click here for summary

The Capabilities and Innovation Perspective: The Way Ahead in Northern Ireland
by Michael H. Best, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Dec 2000
File Size - 97Kb Download Time - 20 sec (56K) 9 sec (128K)
Two factors lay behind the Council's decision to commission this monograph. First, despite numerous economic development strategies and massive public investment, Northern Ireland has failed to close the gap between its living standard and the average living standard for the United Kingdom.
Second, the economic landscape is itself unabated, but also there is now an emerging view that something more fundamental has changed with the appearance of a "new economy".
